SMS Texting Service - Data Protection Information

We have been made aware of a company approaching schools, offering their SMS texting service. This service allows text messages to be sent to numbers registered in the schools MIS.

The company is requesting MIS data in the form of a CSV file containing the names and addresses of children and parents. Please be aware that contact details cannot be sent without the consent of parents. This is a data protection requirement and your school’s privacy notice makes no mention of the use of data in this way. The information collected from parents cannot be used for this purpose without first gaining separate consent. Finally if data is sent to other parties it should always be encrypted and not sent via standard email.

We would like to make you aware that a texting service will be looked at for the new MIS in due course should your school be interested in such products.

If you have any queries around data security please contact ICT Solutions 0845 303 3003 and we will more than happy to assist you before you engage with any data transactions.
