School ICT News Bulletin No. 205 - 20/07/2012

IMPORTANT INFORMATION - POWERING OFF CORE NETWORKING EQUIPMENT OVER SUMMER BREAK

We would like to ask schools to refrain from turning off the power to the core networking equipment over the Summer holiday. Core networking equipment includes routers, switches and cache servers, often in a wall or floor cabinet. These devices are monitored by ICT Shared Services and BT and turning off the power results in false alarms. This could result in your school incurring a charge for an engineer visit.

Services Affected: Schools Internet, email and any service accessed via the internet

Services Not Affected: All other school systems which do not require access to the internet

When: 20 July 2012 – 05 September 2012

What You Need To Do: If there is no alternative to powering off the communications cabinet and core equipment then please contact ICT Shared Services Service Desk to advise us in advance

For More Information: Please contact the ICT Shared Services Service Desk ict@norfolk.gov.uk or 0845 303 3003

Internet filtering update

In the last ebulletin we told you we were hoping to make a decision on a more flexible internet filtering service before the end of term.

We said that ICT Shared Services has worked with BT and they proposed two solutions to provide a filtering service that meets schools’ requirements. We  looked at the proposed products with BT and asked BT to formally propose one solution within the context of the managed service for our consideration.

We have received the proposal but are seeking further clarification before we can make a decision.

We will continue to update information as soon as a decision is made.

ICT Services for Schools Project

During the summer term we have been working on a project to review the ICT Services available from ICT Shared Services.

We have reviewed the feedback from you over the last 18 months to help us build the ICT services that you need to support your school.

Key themes from the feedback are value for money, performance, knowing what the contracts cover and you just want ICT to work. The revised services will be designed to focus on these areas.

ICT Shared Services are aiming to share with you the revised ICT services for schools and academies during the autumn term. These new contracts will be available as part of the Services to Schools brochures for 2012-13.

More information on this will be available from September onwards.
