School's Broadband Service - Update Project and Operational Update 29th November 2013

Broadband Upgrade Project

In MI sheet 244/13 we advised you that the joint project team from ICT Shared Services and BT is undertaking a number of important infrastructure upgrades that will enable the shared internet core provision to be increased from 1Gb and 2Gb. This work was planned to be undertaken by mid November.

Where are we now?

Internet Access

The joint project team completed the infrastructure upgrades to enable the shared internet core provision to be increased from 1Gb and 2Gb.

This work was planned to be undertaken by mid-November and was completed ahead of schedule.

We also said:

Dethrottling of connections into the school

Following the internet upgrade described above we will be implementing a phased programme of bandwidth de-throttling:

  • Secondary schools and academies will have their current rate limit removed to allow the full 100Mb bandwidth
  • Primary, special schools and academies with 10MB links will have their current rate limit removed to allow the full 10Mb bandwidth

Where are we now?

We implemented a phased programme of bandwidth de-throttling as a result of completing the infrastructure upgrades.  This means that schools will be given their full broadband quota as stated above.

Schools that have already been de-throttled are already reporting improved service performance..

The dethrottling work for all schools will be completed by 29th November 2013

Learning Stream Schools

Some Learning Stream schools where other solutions will not be available in the next 2 years, are having an additional ADSL line supplied to shape the traffic and therefore increase the overall internet capacity. 16 schools with this solution have already been supplied with the additional ADSL.

Superfast Broadband

Work has commenced to migrate a number of schools to Superfast Broadband where Superfast is in the ground. 2 schools have now been upgraded to Superfast Broadband.

The project will continue to complete the planned works including over the Christmas holidays where access is possible. We will continue to update you with progress.
