The Norfolk Learners Identity Provider

The Norfolk Learners Identity Provider acts as a trusted place that can verify that an individual belongs to an educational establishment in Norfolk. This enables us to provide single sign-on access to applications via our Norfolk Cloud Portal

The advantages of this are that your username and password do not need to be passed to other third party systems in order for them to provide services to you. Instead, they trust the Norfolk Learners Identity Provider to check your username and password, and then allow access if the Identity Provider says that they match. In addition, you only need to log on once per session and you can then access any of the online services listed on the Identity Provider home page, our Norfolk Cloud Portal, with a single click. The following page provides more detail: Norfolk Cloud Portal Information.

What information do we send to third parties?

For resources that are part of the UK Access Management Federation, we release four key pieces of information:

  • The learning establishments (schools, colleges etc) you are a member of.
  • The role you have at those establishments, e.g. staff/student.
  • The username assigned to you by the Norfolk Identity Provider, e.g. jbloggs3wra.
  • A unique, non-personally identifiable reference number which a third party can use to customise a service for you.

Some providers require further information in order to create accounts, e.g. forename and surname. In these cases, we have agreements in place with the providers to ensure that these details are stored securely and processed fairly. In the UK, this is covered by the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)For services hosted abroad, similar agreements are sought e.g. for Google Apps the  Privacy Shield https://www.privacyshield.gov/welcome covers this. Google's Privacy Policy can be found at https://policies.google.com/privacy.
